Mission Statement

“Advancing the practice of environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste in North America.”

About The Solid Waste Association of North America

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is an organization of more than 10,000 public and private sector professionals committed to advancing from solid waste management to resource management through their shared emphasis on education, advocacy and research. For more than 50 years, SWANA has been the leading association in the solid waste management field. SWANA serves industry professionals through technical conferences, certifications, publications, and a large offering of technical training courses. Follow on TwitterFacebook, or LinkedIn.

SWANA is now the largest member-based solid waste association in the world, with 47 Chapters in the U.S, Canada and the Caribbean. SWANA is the United States National Member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), and participates and supports ISWA events and programs.

SWANA’s prominent and nationally acclaimed technical conferences and training programs cover all aspects of integrated municipal solid waste management, and the association is a major policy and technical representative of solid waste management practitioners, executives, companies, and government organizations.

SWANA began in 1961 in Southern California as the Governmental Refuse Collection and Disposal Association (GRCDA).

About The Utah Beehive Chapter

On May 19, 1976 a group of Utah solid waste professionals and service companies formed the Utah Refuse Collection and Disposal Association (URCDA). This group composed the organizing committee with the intent of seeking chapter status in GRCDA. URCDA submitted the necessary paperwork to support their application for Chapter status. Their application was accepted on September 1, 1976 and their request to change their name to Utah Beehive Chapter was approved on August 28, 1980.

The local chapter offers its members training, and networking opportunities with the assistance of its landfill partners (companies who support and participate in local solid waste activities and training).

As an active member of the Beehive Utah Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) you can participate in the annual chapter board elections. On approximately July 10, 2013, an e-mail will be sent out requesting board nominations be submitted to the current board by a specific date. Those nominations will be used to create the election ballot.

The positions that will be open to nomination/election this summer will be:

• Vice President (President Elect)
• Secretary
• Private Sector Director
• At-Large Director
• Safety Ambassador

Refer to the chapter Bylaws on this website for descriptions of the board positions and what their roles are in the organization. Please watch for the notification of the upcoming nomination period.
