Congratulations to the 2023 Utah SWANA Scholarship Winners!

Allison Hawes - $2,500 scholarship award
McCall Crippen - $2,000 scholarship award

SWANA’s Grant H. Flint Scholarship Awards Program makes available the following:

Category 1 :

Up to three scholarships of $5,000 to high school seniors going onto a two- or four-year college or university.

    • The student can be studying any topic.

    • The students must be sponsored by a relative who is a current SWANA member.

Application for Category 1

Category 2:

Up to one scholarship of $5,000 to a rising college junior or senior.  Students must be enrolled and attending classes to receive this scholarship.

    • The student must be a SWANA student member or must be sponsored by a SWANA member.  SWANA student membership is free for the period the student is enrolled.

    • The applicant must be studying a topic related to solid waste or resource management.  That is interpreted very broadly.  People in our industry don’t work only as engineers and scientists.  It’s OK to consider those who may be studying business or communications or other non-technical topics so long as they make a case in their application that there is relevance to work in the solid waste and resource management industry.  We are trying to attract young people to this field.

Application for Category 2

The Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship:

Named for a co-founder of SCS Engineers, provides $5,000 funding for a student pursuing a graduate degree in an environmental field.

    • The student must be a SWANA student member or must be sponsored by a SWANA member.

    • Students must be enrolled and attending classes to receive the scholarship.

    • Students must be pursuing a graduate degree in an environmental field.

Application forms for these scholarship categories are provided here, and also available on SWANA’s website. All applications forwarded to SWANA for consideration by the International Scholarship Committee must be on SWANA’s forms.

LOCAL UTAH SWANA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIPS:

  • The Utah Beehive Chapter of SWANA is also offering scholarships to local chapter members or their family members, which are separate from the national SWANA scholarship program.  To apply, use the applicable national SWANA application forms (Form #1 or Form #2, as discussed above) and provide the completed application with a brief cover letter to a chapter board member.  The due date for all applications is discussed below.

Applications are required to be submitted to the student’s or sponsor’s Chapter Scholarship Chair no later than May 1, 2023.  Our local chapter is permitted three total nominations for the national SWANA scholarships – one each for the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level.  The Utah chapter will review submittals and provide our recommended nominations to the national coordinator, Sarah Bixby,  by 11:59 pm EDT June 2, 2023 for consideration.

FINAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Please note, regarding the $5,000 Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship, named for SWANA life member and co-founder of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton (GBB). This scholarship is prioritized for undergraduate students enrolled at Northeastern University, Boston, MA interested in a career in the solid waste industry.  That application is written to be used by Northeastern University students only.  However, all chapter nominations at the Category 2 level are also considered for a Gershman Scholarship.  Non-Northeastern University students do not have to complete the Gershman application. The Category 2 application is adequate for this consideration.

Additionally, please note:

  • There are checklists at the end of each SWANA form, for your use, to confirm that the required content has been provided.  Please double check that the student you are nominating has provided all the required information before submitting.

SWANA’s (national and local) awards will be announced in late summer/early autumn!
